Case Study 1: Communication Fault Resolved

Vehicle: Ford diesel application
Concern: Persistent U02A3 communication fault

What was happening

The vehicle had an ongoing PM sensor communication fault, but there was no major drivability complaint at the time. The PM sensor had already been replaced, connector repairs had been carried out, and basic power, ground, and communication checks had been completed.

Diagnostic direction

Even though the communication waveform appeared normal, the fault path still pointed toward a wiring-side communication issue rather than a simple sensor fault. The case did not support stopping at parts replacement alone.

Outcome

A new standalone twisted pair was run from connector C110 to the PM module. The fault cleared, and the vehicle completed multiple test drives without the issue returning.

Key takeaway:
Not every communication fault is solved by replacing the sensor. In this case, the stronger direction remained in the wiring path.


Case Study 2: Unresolved Case, Clearer Next Step

Vehicle: Diesel application following timing-related repair work
Concern: Crank no-start / poor running after service work

What was happening

The running issue persisted after timing-related work had already been completed. Timing had been rechecked and improved, but the correct crankshaft locking tools were not being used, so the base mechanical timing could not yet be fully confirmed.

Diagnostic direction

The strongest direction remained mechanical timing. The case was not yet strong enough to close as a confirmed fuel-system fault or component failure, even though those paths may have seemed tempting.

Best next step

Lock and verify the timing correctly with the proper tools before moving away from a timing-related fault path. This includes confirming crank, cam, and high-pressure fuel pump timing relationship where applicable.
